We are having an exceptional snowkite season this year. Most everything that can be kited, is being ridden. A series of storms graced our kite areas 10 days ago with 15 inches of light snow, on top of an above average snowpack. The last week has brought us unrelenting wind, transforming some of our riding locations by depositing large amounts of snow on the leeward side of most hills and features. This has created some very fun riding conditions for those in search of deep, soft landing pads. With over 100 square miles of riding potential at our fingertips, we are finding a variety of snow conditions. Some locations at higher elevations have been blasted with 40+ mph winds. A general rule of thumb for kiting here, the lower in elevation you go, the lighter the West winds become. As fortune has it, this years freezing levels have been low. The kite size of the day is always different and depends on your riding location. Some days, I have seen a group of kiters using 7 meter kites while 5 miles away, another group of kiters are using 13 meter kites. During this past week, I have watched as some of our more experienced kiters have taken advantage of this years above average snowpack by exploring long stretches of previously unexplored terrain. This is a great year to be snowkiting in Idaho.
